There are many apps for smartphones and tablets that can help people manage their mental health, get support, find resources and even get help in a crisis. But where do you start?

On this page, you’ll find a number of apps that our staff and volunteers have used or recommended. Please note that these apps are not intended to serve as a replacement for mental health treatment if and when needed. Rather, they are to be used as one more tool for wellness, recovery and maintaining positive mental health. We hope they will be helpful to you!!

NotOK

Help is only the tap of a button away. The notOK App™ takes the guesswork out of asking for help when you’re feeling vulnerable. We’ll notify your trusted contacts that they’ve been selected as your support group, so when the time comes and you need to reach out, you’ll just have to open the app and press the large, red notOK™ button.

Calm – Meditate, Sleep, Relax

Calm is a leading app for meditation and sleep. Headspace is your personal guide to health and happiness. It can help you focus, breathe, stay calm, and create the conditions for a better night’s sleep by practicing meditation and mindfulness. When you need some stress relief or lessons on creating a better sleep cycle, Headspace can help. Just download this free meditation, mindfulness, sleep app, then sit back and breathe to relax.

MoodTools: Depression Aid

If you are feeling sad, anxious, or depressed, lift your mood with MoodTools! MoodTools is designed to help you combat depression and alleviate your negative moods, aiding you on your road to recovery. MoodTools contains several different research-supported tools. They include: Thought Diary, Activities, Safety Plan, Information, PHQ-9, and Videos.

FearTools: Anxiety Aid

FearTools is an evidence-based app designed to help you combat anxiety, aiding you on your road to recovery. This application is especially useful for those suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, and Social Anxiety Disorder. FearTools contains several simple, useful, and powerful tools. They include: Thought Diary, Exposure, Breathe, Information, GAD-7 Questionnaire, and Videos.

Mood Meter

The Mood Meter helps you identify your emotions throughout the day and supports you when you’d like to shift to a different emotion. Using the Mood Meter is quick and easy, helping you expand your emotional vocabulary and discover emotional nuances. Check-in regularly with your feelings at work, at home, anytime.

Buddhify

Buddhify is here to help you bring more calm, clarity and kindness to all parts of your life. No need to find the time for a formal meditation session everyday, we’ll show you how to bring mindfulness to all parts of your life with exercises for whatever you’re doing and wherever you are – from traveling, taking a break at work or going to sleep. We’ll help you find calm in any situation.

What’s Up?

This app uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) methods to help you cope with Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and more. Use the positive and negative habit tracker to maintain your good habits, and break those that are counterproductive.

PTSD Coach

PTSD Coach was designed for Veterans and military Service members who have, or may have, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This app provides users with education about PTSD, information about professional care, a self-assessment, opportunities to find support, and tools that can help users manage the stresses of daily life with PTSD.

Lyf – You’re Not Alone

Real people, real stories, no judgement. Life is all kinds of amazing. It’s also all kinds of hard. Whatever you’re dealing with, there are others who can relate – people who would cheer you on if they could hear you. That’s what Lyf is for: a platform to share stuff that might be too personal for your other social media, without the fear of judgement.

eQuoo – Emotional Fitness Game

What happens when a psychologist teams up with the creators of The Walking Dead games? Introducing eQuoo, an EVIDENCE-BASED and captivating choose-your-own-adventure game that increases your emotional fitness and teaches you new psychological skills, helping you level up in real life. These key skills will help you take control of your life, maintain your mental health and achieve success in work and relationships.

Self-Help Anxiety Management

SAM is a friendly app that offers a range of self-help methods for people who are serious about learning to manage their anxiety. Users are encouraged to build their own Anxiety Toolkit of SAM resources that they find helpful and to draw on this for regular practice in managing situations that are associated with anxiety.

MoodMission

MoodMission helps you learn new and better ways of coping with stress, low mood, depression, and anxiety. Tell MoodMission how you’re feeling and it will give you a tailored list of 5 Missions that can help you feel better and improve your wellbeing. Anyone can use MoodMission, whether you just want a lift in your day or need a bit more help recovering from anxiety or depression.

Catch It

Catch It is a joint project between the Universities of Liverpool and Manchester, to help users better understand their moods through use of an ongoing diary. The app was designed to illustrate some of the key principles of psychological approaches to mental health and well-being, and specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
