A Story of Healing
I first became ill in 1985 on a vacation with my women friends. I was hospitalized and put in seclusion. Ancient spirits danced around me – chanting and tapping soothing and healing tones. I’m sure the injections had a lot to do with altering my psychotic state as well.
I went back to work part-time and eased into full-time when school started, but my illness progressed and I would get sick in the summer, alternating between hospitals and mental health programs.
Finally, my doctor said I had to retire on disability. The reduced stress has helped me heal and newer advances in neuroleptic medications have made a tremendous difference. I’m now volunteering at two places – Hennepin County Medical Center for over a year and Consumer Survivor Network’s Warm Line since October of 2003.
I’m not sure if I’ll be able to return to paid work but I’m leading a fulfilled life now, having joined a knitting group on Wednesday evenings and contacting old friends from high school and college.
